Physical and Health Education with Teacher Licensure - TUG

Gardner-Webb University's Physical and Health Education with Teacher Licensure Program will provide you with a licensure program that will help you become a professional educator at any grade level, K-12.

Program Description The BS in Physical Education / Health Education with Teacher Licensure program is a 64 hour program that includes a minor in Professional Education. In a student’s final year of study, they will complete full-time student teaching in a clinical placement, working with a cooperating educator at the school while being mentored by University faculty. The PHED program at Gardner-Webb University is state-approved by the North Carolina State Board of Education.

As a student in this program, you'll have opportunities to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of common and specialized content in health and in physical education for the delivery of effective PK-12 health and physical education programs, as assessed by the Praxis Subject Area Exam (formerly Praxis II);
  • be physically literate individuals who can demonstrate skillful performance in physical education content areas for team sports and individual/dual sports, as assessed by a reliable and valid team or individual sport skills test;
  • plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning tasks aligned with local, state, and/or national standards and grade-level outcomes for PK-12 physical education and health to address the diverse needs of all students, as assessed by the GWU PHED Lesson Plan Rubric(s);
  • engage students in meaningful learning tasks through the effective use of pedagogical skills to enhance student learning, as assessed through scores on edTPA Task 2; and
  • select and implement appropriate formal and informal assessments to monitor students’ progress and guide decision-making related to physical education and health instruction and learning, as assessed through scores on edTPA Task 3.
