1. Submit an application form along with a nonrefundable processing fee.
2. Request an official transcript from the institution where the highest degree was conferred to be sent to Graduate Admissions. Additional official transcripts may be required for reasons such as prerequisite verification, GPA recalculation, licensure documentation, or institutional reporting needs. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted to expedite the review process.

Appropriate references may include (1) a current or former professor, (2) a current or former supervisor, (3) an academic or business professional. See specific program requirements for references.

Counseling
https://gardner-webb.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2025-2026/academic-catalog/the-gayle-bolt-price-school-of-graduate-studies/college-of-health-sciences/counseling/admission-requirements
The requirements for the role of counselor are both personal and intellectual. Program faculty review completed application materials and assess applicants’ readiness for counseling training based on these criteria. Qualified applicants are invited for an interview with faculty, during which personal qualities, goals, and academic background are further evaluated. Admission may be granted to those who meet both the personal and academic requirements of the program.
To be eligible for admission to graduate programs in the Department of Counselor Education, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on the transcript from the degree-granting institution, or a GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate or graduate work.
2. Submission of an acceptable score on the GRE (290/3.5) is optional.
3. Three positive references from professors, faculty advisors, employers, and/or supervisors who have knowledge of an applicant’s personal characteristics and/or academic abilities.
4. A satisfactory criminal background check for all states of residence over the past five years, along with a residence verification statement. The criminal background check is required to meet the standards of some field placement sites where counseling methods are learned and practiced. Criminal background histories obtained for employment purposes are not acceptable for admission. Information regarding a student's criminal background history will be included in their confidential academic file. Any conviction or pending criminal charges cited in the criminal history will be reviewed by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Vice President for Enrollment Management, and Department Faculty. Any allegations or charges of misdemeanor(s) or felony(s) that occur after submission of the background check must be reported immediately to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and the Chair of Counselor Education. Failure to report may result in dismissal.
5. A successful interview with faculty in the program.
In addition to the above, program-specific prerequisites apply:
· The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program requires completion of at least 9 hours of psychology or related coursework, including psychopathology or abnormal psychology. If abnormal psychology or psychopathology is not completed prior to admission, it must be completed before enrolling in corresponding advanced courses.
· The School Counseling Program has no prerequisites for admission; however, two courses have prerequisites that may be taken concurrently with graduate courses. An undergraduate course in abnormal psychology or psychopathology must be completed before taking the corresponding advanced-level course. Applicants without teacher
licensure must complete an undergraduate course in classroom management before the practicum. Teacher licensure is not required for admission.
Please see the Graduate Studies General Admission Requirements for important information about transcript submission.

1. Current enrollment in or graduation from a CACREP-accredited counseling program comparable to Gardner-Webb’s offerings;
2. Submission of an official transcript demonstrating good standing and a minimum GPA of 3.0, or showing the degree conferred;
3. A formal application to the School of Graduate Studies, including a cover letter explaining the desired courses, reasons for seeking them at Gardner-Webb, and why they cannot be taken at the home institution; and
