EDU 306 Literacy and Language Arts for K-8
This course is designed to provide elementary candidates with an awareness of the importance of literacy and language arts in the 21st-century classroom. Candidates will be immersed in literacy and reading instruction as they develop oral and communication skills. This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language, with a focus on phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and writing. Students learn the sound-symbol correspondences of language and understand the relationship of phonemic awareness and the phonological system of language to the reading process. Students also study the linguistic and cognitive bases of reading.
The purpose of this class is to develop pre-service teachers who are aware of the tremendous importance of communication in the classroom. Listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing are the threads that wind through every area of the curriculum. The conceptual framework utilized and practiced for the Educator Preparation Program is a combination of knowledge, skill, understanding, technology, ethics, and disposition.
Each student is challenged to seek and to live out the roles of a theorist and practitioner through coursework, personal influence, field experiences, and modeling. The educator as theorist and practitioner focuses on four areas or threads: the learner and learning; methodology; social context; and professional development. The outcome of these experiences should be to produce beginning teachers who are knowledgeable in theory and skilled in practice. Twelve (12) hours Field Experience required. Field Experience placement requests will be communicated by the Director of Clinical Experiences. Candidates must request a placement by the deadline and complete the experience in the assigned placement. Transportation to and from placement is the responsibility of the candidate.
