HIST 356 Modern China

This course traces the trajectory of modern Chinese history beginning from Qing China’s door forced open by Western powers in the Opium War and ending with a discussion of contemporary China and her issues. In her quest for a strong nation state, China has experienced a range of challenges, internal and external, which include the incomplete 1911 Revolution, the disruption of warlords, the Japanese invasion, the Civil War, the Cultural Revolution, and Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. With a focus on significant events, influential ideals, leading figures, gender relations, and everyday life, the course explores the major transformations China has undergone in social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions on the path to modernization.
