HIST 351 Revolution and Democracy in East Asia
This course surveys the interrelated histories of China, Japan, and Korea from 1600 to the present day. Important questions we will address are: How did the three countries respond to Western presence? How did they quest for national survival and modernization? Why did they take markedly different paths toward a strong nation state? What were their interactions and conflicts? What role did women play in the three countries’ modern transformation? What was the fate of traditional institutions, beliefs, and practices? Major topics include imperialism, colonialism, revolution, democracy, socialism, and gender relations.
