HIST 350 East Asia: Traditions and Culture

This course is an introduction to East Asian traditions and culture with a focus on China, Japan, and Korea from the prehistoric period to the nineteenth century. We will look into how the three countries developed their own national identities and at the same time created their shared cultural heritage. Topics cover a wide range, including family, society, governance, thought, religion, and literature and arts. The course does not assume prior knowledge of East Asian languages and is intended to provide a base for further study.
