Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching, Master of Arts (formerly Teacher Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction)

Graduate courses for the master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction are designed to assist in the advanced preparation of individuals who desire to become curriculum leaders. The Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching (MCLIC) program allows learners to improve professional skills, put theory into practice, and enhance pedagogical and integration expertise. Candidates will benefit from a synthesis of current research and classroom applications during the coursework and in Clinical Experience. Candidates may choose from a general program of study in Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching or may concentrate in Academically/Intellectually Gifted Education. An add-on licensure in Academically/Intellectually Gifted Education is also available. The MCLIC Program at Gardner-Webb University is state-approved by the North Carolina State Board of Education.

Admission Requirements

Program-specific admission requirements for full acceptance into the Master of Arts in Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching (MCLIC) are listed below.

Graduates from Gardner-Webb University’s College of Education have the opportunity for seamless admission within one year of graduation based on meeting GPA and licensure testing requirements as verified by the College of Education and documented in a letter from the dean. With this documentation in place and verification of graduation, the application fee will be waived. When applying, candidates must submit items 5 and 6 in the admission requirements below.

1. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all work completed beyond high school

2. Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test, or PRAXIS II Subject Assessment

3. An "A"-level teaching license or equivalent for those who are pursuing graduate-level licensure. For those who are not pursuing graduate-level licensure, equivalent teaching experience is required.

4. Three professional recommendations from persons, at least one of whom is a current or former school administrator, who know the applicant’s work as an educator or student

5. Access to a classroom in which to engage in instruction

Program Goals

The Master of Arts in Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching is designed to meet the following program goals:

  1. Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching candidates demonstrate leadership:

    a. Model collaboration, collaborate with colleagues at the district level, and partner with other educators to facilitate professional learning.

    b. Advocate for students, educators, schools, and sound educational programs.

    2. Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching candidates will support an environment that is respectful of a diverse population of educators:

    a. Differentiate professional learning to meet the diverse learning needs in the school/district.

    3. Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching candidates will incorporate adult learning strategies and effective teaching and learning practices as they implement change:

    a. Engage colleagues in challenging conversations about data to develop appropriate solutions.

    b. Plan and deliver professional support, use effective adult-learning strategies, and support stages of change and innovation in the school and district.

    4. Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching candidates will facilitate the growth and development of educators:

    a. Employ appropriate and available technology as they support educators.

    b. Incorporate the Framework for 21st Century Learning to enhance educators’ instructional planning and assessment.

    5. Curriculum Leadership and Instructional Coaching candidates will engage in and facilitate reflective practice:

    a. Assess the effectiveness of the support they provide and revise their practices based on findings.

      b. Facilitate reflective practice in others.

     
     

MTLCI Curriculum (33 hours)

Candidates will begin their course of study by focusing on the history and philosophy of curriculum and will delve deeply into their chosen area of concentration. Candidates will continue through the program as combined cohorts. While the content of the rest of the coursework will center on Curriculum and Instruction, candidates will continue to maintain a focus on their specific concentration through common evidences and a three-credit-hour Clinical Experience (consisting of 135 contact hours) embedded throughout the program.

Upon completion of add-on licensure requirements, candidates are required to apply for graduation and pay the Graduate Certificate Fee. Candidates applying past the deadline for the semester in which they complete their add-on licensure requirements will be charged the Late Graduate Certificate Fee.
