Retention Policy

Consistent with university policy, a Department of Counselor Education student must have an average program GPA of 3.0 overall to be awarded a degree or a post-master’s certificate. When the GPA falls below 3.0, the student is placed on probation. If, after six hours of additional work, the student does not attain a 3.0 overall, the student will be suspended. A suspended student may reapply after one year. The program graduate faculty makes the decision on whether to readmit and, if readmitted, the stipulations that will apply. The factors considered in determining readmission and potential readmission stipulations include student assessment data collected during the prior enrollment period as well as evidence of enhanced readiness to demonstrate the necessary academic skills and professional dispositions. A student may not take courses for transfer credit from another institution while on suspension or on probation.
