PRESCRIBED COURSES ATTAINABLE IN GEN ED: ENGL 212, ENGL 231, ENGL 232, ENGL 251, ENGL 252

While some English courses may fulfill General Education and major requirements (ENGL 212, ENGL 231, ENGL 232, ENGL 251, and ENGL 252), credit hours for those courses can only be counted toward General Education or the English major. Students who take courses required in the major that also meet a General Ed requirement will need to take additional ENGL hours to fulfill the required 67 program hours. (see General Education Requirements)

The English with Teacher Licensure Major prepares graduates to meet all requirements for certification to teach high school English in North Carolina.

Students will complete Senior Exit Interview requirements in the final semester of coursework.

Program Learning Outcomes

To accomplish the mission of the Department of English Language and Literature, students in the Bachelor of Arts in English with Teacher Licensure program will

1. communicate and compose effectively in written and multimodal forms;
2. read and analyze texts that represent diverse points of view;
3. demonstrate competence in disciplinary-specific content;
4. demonstrate research and critical thinking skills that culminate in an independent capstone project;
5. demonstrate fluency with digital technologies;

Professional Education Minor

Students will not be permitted to complete more than 50% of the Professional Education minor (excluding student teaching) until they are formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program. All candidates must be fully admitted into the Teacher Education Program a minimum of two full semesters prior to the semester in which they student teach. Ideally, students should interview no later than the end of the first semester of the junior year. See School of Education for additional requirements.
