HSEC 451 Gang Studies

This course places emphasis on gangs in the United States and is designed to provide students an understanding of what a gang is, the extent of their connections, and the response to gangs. The course is divided into three sections. In the first section, students learn the history of gangs, their demographics and topology, various gang definitions, and apply criminological theory to the liberation of gangs. In other words, what constitutes a gang and why do they form? The second section emphasizes the interconnectivity of gang members as social actors. Some of the topics that are covered include gangs in the media, sports and entertainment, social networks and online behavior, gangs in the military and law enforcement, and global perspectives on gangs. What is the extent of gang connections in society? In the final section, students cover the response to gangs from various parts of the criminal justice system. How have the various branches of the criminal justice system responded to gangs?
