Nursing Accelerated Masters Program

Accelerated Master of Science in Nursing (MSN-AMP)

The Accelerated Master of Science in Nursing program allows undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students to begin work in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program while completing their BSN degree. Qualified students may apply for admission to the accelerated master's program (MSN-AMP) during their junior year (or at the completion of 60 credit hours).

Students enrolled in this program can take up to 20% of graduate coursework toward the MSN degree while completing their undergraduate degree at GWU, provided they earn a grade of B or better in each graduate course. No more than 20% of graduate courses (6 hours) will count in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Application and Admission

Qualified Gardner-Webb University undergraduate BSN students may apply for admission to the Accelerated MSN program.

Program-specific admission requirements for full acceptance into the Accelerated MSN program include the following:

  • Completion of at least 60 credit hours with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or above, or GPA of 2.7 or above on the last 60 ours of undergraduate work.
  • Completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course with a grade of "C" or above, or an earned level 3 or better on an AP statistics exam.
  • No standardized test score is required.
  • Davis RN-BSN students must hold current, unrestricted nursing licensure and are eligible to take up to 6 graduate credit hours.
  • Accelerated and Traditional BSN students who do not hold current, unrestricted nursing licensure are eligible to take up to 3 graduate credit hours.

Students admitted to the accelerated MSN program and who achieve a 3.0 GPA or better in their graduate-level courses and maintain at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA will be granted seamless admission to the MSN program upon receiving their baccalaureate degree and demonstrating current, unrestricted nursing licensure. Students without licensure may be considered for full admission pending documentation of licensure. If overall GPA requirements are not met, students may still apply to the MSN program and their application will be reviewed for determination of admission.

Courses

The MSN program requires 30 credit hours of graduate-level coursework. If the maximum of 6 credit hours is double counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees, the student must complete a minimum of 24 additional credit hours of graduate-level coursework to complete the MSN degree. For a course to apply to both degrees, the student must earn a grade of B or above in the course and fulfill graduate-level requirements.

Once admitted to the accelerated MSN program, the student will consult with their undergraduate advisor and the Chair of the MSN program for registration each semester.

All degree requirements for the 30-hour MSN degree will remain the same. The following graduate courses may be counted toward both the BSN and MSN degrees:

NURS 501 (Nursing and Healthcare Systems and Issues) can fulfill the requirement for NUR 303 (Trends in Health Care) in the Davis RN-BSN program. NURS 502 (Methods of Advanced Research) can fulfill the requirement for NUR 301 (Research in Nursing) in the Davis RN-BSN program. Only 6 hours may be counted as requirements toward both the BSN and MSN degrees in the Davis RN-BSN program.

NURS 502 (Methods of Advanced Research) can fulfill the requirement for NUR 470 (Research for Evidence-Based Practice) in the accelerated BSN (ABSN) and NURS 470 (Research for Evidence-Based Practice) in the traditional BSN (TBSN) programs. Only 3 hours may be counted as requirements toward both the BSN and MSN degrees in the accelerated and traditional BSN programs and the MSN program.
