MPAS 571 Special Populations/Geriatrics

MPAS 571 Special Populations & Geriatrics is a course designed to address the unique health issues of minority patient populations in society and older adults' special medical and psychosocial needs. Utilizing knowledge of diseases learned concurrently in the PA Medicine course series, pharmacology, and skills gained in patient assessment and management, the course will expand the scope of care to these unique populations. A focus on providing caring, compassionate, non-biased care to all individuals is emphasized. In Module One, the following minority population groups' needs are addressed: the LGBTQ community, the homeless, recent immigrants, veterans, patients with significant disabilities, and prison populations. Module Two examines physical and psychosocial changes that occur with aging and health-related problems commonly seen in the older patient population. Topics include the impact of aging on quality of life, mobility and communication, access to health care, therapeutic interventions, and issues related to death and dying.
